Home Maintenance in Winter
By mid-winter, your home has already been exposed to harsh conditions, so ongoing maintenance is key. Here are some essential tips to keep things running smoothly and prevent damage:
Indoor Maintenance:
1. Monitor for Ice Dams – Check your roof for icicles or ice buildup, which can lead to leaks. Use a roof rake to clear snow if necessary.
2. Check for Drafts – If you notice cold spots, reinforce weather stripping or use door draft stoppers.
3. Prevent Pipe Freezing – Monitor faucets, drafts, and pipes during extreme cold to keep pipes from freezing. Consider using a space area to heat areas that may normally freeze.
4. Maintain Your Heating System – Replace filters monthly and listen for any unusual noises that might indicate a problem.
5. Use a Humidifier – Dry winter air can damage wood furniture and flooring, and irritate skin and sinuses.
Outdoor Maintenance:
6. Keep Walkways & Driveways Clear – Regularly shovel snow and use ice melt or sand to prevent slips.
7. Check the Roof & Gutters – Heavy snow buildup can strain the roof; clear snow if needed to avoid collapses.
8. Inspect Outdoor Vents – Ensure dryer, furnace, and exhaust vents remain clear of snow to prevent dangerous gas buildup.
9. Look for Signs of Pest Activity – Rodents and other animals seek warmth indoors, so check for any entry points.
10. Check Your Emergency Supplies – Ensure flashlights, batteries, and backup heating sources are available in case of a power outage.
